In New Zealand, the education system is aimed at providing New Zealand rangatahi (teenages) an opportunity to gain qualifications called National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).
At Te Kamo High School, as an international student you will also have the opportunity to study under the NCEA framework. There maybe benefit in exploring this if you are with us for an extended period of time (6months to a year) but the opportunity is available to all international students.
NCEA is more than just a final exam. It is a flexible, modern qualification designed to recognize your unique strengths. Instead of one big test at the end of the year, you gain credits throughout the year for the skills and knowledge you demonstrate.
Global Recognition: NCEA is recognized by universities in Australia, the UK, the USA, Europe, and Asia. It is a trusted pathway to top-tier education.
Flexibility: You aren't stuck studying subjects you don't like. You can mix and match subjects—from Science and Calculus to Digital Technology and the Arts—to build a course that suits your career goals.
Holistic Assessment: You are tested on what you know and what you can do. This includes traditional exams, but also practical experiments, portfolios, speeches, and research projects.
This short video proves a great overview of the NCEA process:
NCEA creates a personalized learning journey through three levels, usually corresponding to your final three years of high school.
The "Credit" System
Think of Credits as the currency of learning. Every subject is made up of different standards. When you pass a standard, you earn credits.
Internal Assessments: Assignments or projects marked by your teacher during the school year.
External Assessments: Exams or portfolios marked by national markers at the end of the year.
Ready to start your journey?
NCEA challenges you to be a critical thinker and a lifelong learner. It prepares you not just for exams, but for the future.
